About The Sunset Inn

This story begins like every good story starts: with love at first sight.
Once upon a time, a first glimpse of North Carolina’s barrier island beach transformed one child’s simple family vacation into something else entirely: a seed to what was to become a lifelong dream of turning Sunset Beach into home.

Realizing the Dream, Meet Dave Nelson

In 2000, Dave Nelson finally fulfilled his childhood dream. He paid back and paid forward, his childhood inspiration with the opening of Sunset Inn.
Dave first visited Sunset Beach in 1965 as a young boy, vacationing in one of the few homes on the island. Growing up in Western North Carolina, he was captivated by its beauty and knew he wanted to live there someday. After years of family vacations and eventually owning property, he made the move in 1990, leaving a secure management job to follow his dream. As he crossed the one-lane pontoon bridge during his move, he took off his watch and tossed it in no more time clocks. It’s Island Time now, a lifestyle he highly recommends.

Over the years living on the island and working with Century 21 Sunset Realty, Dave became the top sales agent, a Masters Club member, and a multiple time Century 21 Centurion recipient. He is also a licensed North Carolina General Contractor and owner of Dave Nelson Construction.

While Dave and his wife Kelly are active in real estate, you’ll often see them working around the property as well, especially in the gardens, where Kelly creates the beautiful baskets and planters.

Operations Manager, Meet Samantha Carnahan

Samantha relocated from the western part of the state and brings with her years of experience from the Inn on Biltmore Estate.  With a wealth of knowledge and expertise, she and her team are excited to welcome guests to The Sunset Inn, where they are dedicated to creating a peaceful and relaxing experience for all.

“I’m thrilled to step into the role of manager with The Sunset Inn and to continue the beautiful legacy of warmth, relaxation, and Southern charm that’s made this place so special for our guests.”

Supporting the team are office assistants Debi Echard, Mona Johnson-Gibson, and Donna Schmidt, who play an essential role in the day-to-day operations of the business.

Housekeeping Manager Yesenia Rivera has been with the Inn since 2003 and takes great pride in ensuring every room is clean, comfortable, and well cared for.

Marketing, Meet Andrea Ward

Andrea Ward has been with The Sunset Inn since its doors first opened in 2000. Even during the construction phase, she was at the helm, overseeing every detail of its management. Over the years, Andrea has hosted countless successful retreats and welcomed thousands of guests many of whom return year after year for another relaxing stay.
After more than two decades of dedicated leadership, Andrea is happy to hand over the reins to Samantha and is now enjoying focusing on marketing for The Sunset Inn. In this new role, she continues to support the Inn while helping share its story and timeless coastal charm with future guests.

Gem of a hotel in Sunset Beach. Rooms are unique but each has a view of the marsh. Short distance to the beach. Really nice linens - sheets and towels! Very nice staff experience keeping it personal but also low key. We'll be back!
