Location, Beach & Getting Around

How far is the beach?

The Sunset Inn is just a short 5-minute walk from the beautiful shores of Sunset Beach. In just a few minutes, you can go from relaxing on our peaceful marsh front porch to enjoying the beach.

Do I need a car during my stay?

Many guests choose to park their car and enjoy walking during their stay. The beach, Sunset Beach Pier and local shops are all within walking distance. If you’d like to explore surrounding coastal towns and attractions, having a car is recommended.

What airport is closest?

The closest airports are Myrtle Beach International Airport (MYR), approximately 35 miles south, and Wilmington International Airport (ILM), approximately 55 miles north.

Can I walk to restaurants?

There are no full-service restaurants located on Sunset Beach Island, helping preserve the quiet, laid-back charm that makes the island so special. However, the Sunset Beach Pier Grill offers a casual spot for breakfast, lunch, and beach favorites with ocean views. Several excellent dining options are also located just across the bridge on the mainland. While walking is possible, the round trip is several miles, so most guests prefer to drive. Just 10 minutes away, Calabash, North
Carolina, is famous for its Calabash-style seafood and offers a wide variety of waterfront restaurants, casual eateries, and local favorites.

How far is Bird Island and the Kindred Spirit Mailbox?

Bird Island is located at the west end of Sunset Beach and is accessible only by foot or bicycle. From the Sunset Beach Pier, it is approximately a 2 1/2-mile walk along the shoreline to the famous Kindred Spirit Mailbox (about a 5-mile round trip). The walk offers beautiful views of the protected coastal reserve and is one of the area’s most memorable experiences.

Is The Sunset Inn oceanfront?

No. The Sunset Inn overlooks the peaceful salt-water marsh, offering beautiful sunsets and a tranquil setting. The beach and Atlantic Ocean are just a short walk away.

Stay Information & Amenities

Do you provide beach chairs, towels, umbrellas, and beach carts?

Beach towels are available for purchase in our gift shop. We offer beach chair and umbrella rentals, as well as two beach carts available to rent. Availability is limited and offered on a first-come, first-served basis.

Do you rent bicycles?

We do not rent bicycles on-site, but rentals are available nearby. Our staff is happy to provide recommendations.

Is taxi service, Uber, or Lyft available?

Rideshare services such as Uber and Lyft are available but may be limited depending on the time of year. Traditional taxi service is available year-round.
